Physical Activity and Mobility Task Group goals

 

 

Goal A.  All older adults will have knowledge of, and access to, effective programs and services that preserve or improve their physical mobility and lower the risk of falls.

Strategy 1         Create a local web-based clearinghouse to disseminate consumer information and resources related to physical mobility and falls prevention.

 

Action Steps

  1. Identify organizations with local presence and connections to take the lead in the development of physical activity resources specifically for older adults.

    a.  Contact Partnerships in Aging (PIA), Older Adult Vision       Council, Senior living facilities (OHA & Seldin), Parish nursing network through Alegent, health facilities, seniors centers and Exercise facilities regarding what they are offering regarding physical activity for seniors.

    b.  Create mass email from task group asking what services are offered, who is the contact person, and do they provide transportation.

  2.  Collect and evaluate information on available resources (e.g., services and programs, information on how to access them, and tip sheets.)
  3.  Identify information and resource gaps and seek new materials as needed.
  4.  Launch and solicit feedback from priority target audiences of the resources.
  5. Keep information up to date created through bi-yearly correspondence with organization supplying information.
  6. Prove links to other websites on the F1RST website.

Strategy 2         Increase awareness among older adults, their caregivers, and health care professionals of factors that can contribute to decline in physical mobility.

 

Action Steps 

  1. Identify and modify as necessary an easy-to-use self-assessment tool through researching what is currently available.
  2.  Have self assessment available on website, and add to Tool-Kit for distribution.
  3. Publicize and disseminate self-assessment tool through local media outlets.

Strategy 3         Increase the knowledge of appropriate physical mobility programs and services for older adults and promote existing proven interventions.

 

Action Steps

  1. Develop physical activity interventions specific to fall prevention.
  2. Identify research proven interventions
  3. Provide training for research proven interventions

    a.  Continue training “Movement Improvement T’ai Chi” instructors

      • Insure cross marketing of tools to older population through trainers
      • Gather statistics from certified instructors regarding classes and sizes
      • Gather results of pre and post testing
     

    b.  Continue training “A Matter of Balance” Instructors

      • Gather statistics from certified instructors regarding classes and sizes
      • Gather results of pre and post testing
  1. Identify paying locations for both classes as well as continue to provide free classes to low income facilities
  2. Publicize existing programs through website and tool-kit
  3. Provide awareness of best practices for things people can do at home for free

    a.  Ex.  Walking, laundry, stair climbing, yard work, sweeping.

    b.  Cross market interventions of other task groups.
