Home Safety and Modifications Task Group Goals

Goal A:  All older adults will have knowledge of and access to home safety measures (including information, assessments and home modification) that reduce home hazards, improve independent functioning, and lower the risk of falls.

Strategy 1- Raise awareness and disseminate information about home safety practices and options for caregivers and older adults to reduce falls.

Action Steps:

  1. Identify credible and culturally sensitive training and education resource and reputable web sites where older adults, family, and professionals can access information on home modification and make this information available to the community in areas where people at risk for falling tend to go (e.g. libraries, faith-based organizations (example Catholic Voice KB, parish nursing organizations, medical professionals esp. those dealing with people who have fallen) We decided that reputable warrants more discussion and plan to put lists on the FIRST web site, having Staff print it as requested by individuals to minimize cost and make updating more feasible.
  2. Educate consumers on their rights regarding home modification with a focus on renters.  We want to tap into Fair Housing Advisory Group.
  3. Include information about home modification and home safety in pre-retirement planning seminars and materials.

Strategy 2 - Identify funding sources and community-based resources to assist older adults in accessing home assessment and making appropriate modifications.

Action Steps:

  1. Identify current funding resources for home assessments and modifications and organizations that can provide them.  Include low-cost, no cost, and others.  We decided this would be part of info on web site and would include minimal info.  That would require a person to call and make their own inquiries about qualifications, service area, etc. but would minimize amount of time on research and updates.
  2. Promote recycling of pre-owned home modification and assistive devised by identifying existing and exploring the creation of potential additional sources of recycling.  We add an educational component for the consumer about safe practices with used equipment and engaging professionals as needed for appropriate selection, sizing, and use as needed.
  3. Create a group of volunteers (students UNO and other students suggested) educated in assisting with self-assessments to recognize home barriers that might contribute to falls. These are to be qualified volunteers who do onsite education and assist with home safety self-assessments and then provide follow-up with resources for funding and further professional assistance as needed.

Strategy 3- Support consumer adoption of home modifications aimed at fall prevention by featuring examples that are attractive, appropriate for home settings, easy to implement, straightforward to use, affordable, and effective.

Action Steps:

  1. Engage key home improvement industry partners in developing information and products to support safe home environments.  We discussed engaging MOBA in our efforts.
  2. Create a public awareness campaign that can be adopted by a variety of organizations.
  3. Use home improvement video to feature home modification information that is targeted to midlife and older adults.
