Purchasing Used Health Equipment – What to Consider

When purchasing health equipment, there are many options or decisions to make. In some cases, health insurance does not cover needed equipment or you or your loved one may need or want equipment without a physician’s order for it.

Many pharmacies and durable medical equipment companies exist that sell health equipment. Hardware stores and home improvement stores also often sell certain items like grab bars and shower seats. Health equipment recycling programs are also an option. These programs give health equipment, often for a low fee to cover overhead costs, that was donated by individuals who no longer need it. In some cases, the equipment is given to the person and in other cases, the equipment is loaned and rented while the person needs the equipment. For people with temporary disabilities, a loan or rental program may work best. These items are usually loaned on a sliding fee scale based upon your income. Used equipment can also be found at garage sales and internet classifieds like Craig’s list.

When purchasing or renting used equipment, it is important to consider some important factors prior to making a decision. If you choose used equipment, consider the following:
